Federal govt outlines fight against graft in GTP roadmap, but we doubt it
The federal government said it aims to increase its score in Transparency International’s (TI) Corruption Perception Index (CPI) Score to 4.9 in 2010 from 4.5 presently as part of the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) Roadmap launched here yesterday by Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Malaysia has seen its position in TI’s CPI drop to 56 in 2009 from 23 in 1995. The CPI measures the perceived level of public-sector corruption in 180 countries and territories around the world.
We are doubtful. Does the Umno-led Barisan federal government really has the political will to get rid of corruption and initiate changes in its administration? We had heard and seen many pledges after pledges and some even openly promised to combat corruption but to-date, nothing concrete has been seen.
What we saw today is the MACC kept its subservient role of going after only the Pakatan Rakyat leaders and their currently rule state governments. Deputy Prime Minister and Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin recently said that the people should not mock the GTP as the government is becoming more open.
Just what kind of openness is Muhyiddin talking about? We did not see any real openness in any of the government policies and proceedings. No transparency, no accountability and not even competency at all. It is still the same, operating like a secret Nazi police state.
We did not see the MACC effectively pursuing those corrupted Umno leaders who had swindled billions of ringgit of public funds at all. What they did is just fishing up those small fish and flies but those big ones are just let off like that just because they are prominent members and top leaders of Umno.
It shows what the Umno-led BN doing all these while "fighting graft" are mere window dressing and just a staged show. We would like to challenge the Umno-led Barisan federal government again, if you are really serious about the GTP, take out the MACC from the prime minister's department and put it directly under the parliament. Make the MACC chief commissioner answerable to the parliament.
And we also would like to remind the minister in the prime minister's department and Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon not to pretend that nothing is wrong in the administration. Yuo have been with the Barisan for decades and we are certain that you are clearly aware of what is currently happening in the government. Everything from the bottom right to the top are being manipulated by from local Umno branch leaders right up to the Umno supreme council members.
The only effective way to fight corruption and to increase the score in the Transparency International’s (TI) Corruption Perception Index (CPI) Scorecard is to change the federal government in the next general elections.
