Why focus on "death" challenge instead of our people?
The 13th general elections (GE13) would be called soon anytime from now. Political leaders from both side, be it Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Rakyat (Pakatan), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (KITA) or Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) are all now gearing up for what we may consider the most exciting general elections (GE) in the history.
Once the parliament and state legislative assemblies dissolution are being announced, the real battle is on. But, all these are yet to take place, the fight between BN and Pakatan leaders is already on at the ground level. Each of them issuing "death" challenges to their rivals challenging one another to a one way ticket contest in order to "kill off their enemy" in their selected constituencies.
First of all, why are these politicians taking up this GE13 as a personal battle for them? Why are these political leaders taking up these GE13 so personal until a challenge is being issued to the leaders of the rival party? To prove who is the real "giant" or "mighty strong" leader? Haven't these politicians forgotten that when they are contesting in elections, their priority is for the people?
And now, these selfish politicians are only thinking of their own benefits, their fame and popularity by issuing these kind of "death" challenges to one another. What if the other refuses to accept the challenge, will the challenger name or label his proposed rival as coward or "penakut" by declaring himself a "winner" thus, making himself a mere big face in the local newspapers or online news portals.
In contesting not only for the GE13 but for the subsequent GE to come, the contesting political parties and party leaders should be focusing on what they could offer to their people as an alternative to the existing policies and implementations; what they could bring in to uphold the socio-economy and well being of our people; what they could offer to ease the burden of our people and the nation, and how to address challenges our people and the nation are due to face as well as benefits of any kind that will ease our people's challenges such as household income, social status, inflations, etc, etc.
In the GE, these are the main criteria that the people (voters) are really looking forward to hear from and not all those personal "death" challenges issued by one party leader to another. Take one example, Penang BN chairman and Gerakan secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow had issued a challenge to Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng in order to prove his worth. So what? Teng wanted to be a hero and that is why he issued that challenge to Guan Eng to contest a seat of his choice as part of the condition.
In Penang, Teng as the state BN chairman should realize the real sentiment amongst the people there and should instead focus and concentrate on how or what to offer to the people in the state as an effective opposition. And for Guan Eng's side, if he is a truly concern about the current situation and in further improving his state administration as well as the state's economic structure, he should have just ignore the challenge instead of responding it because it would be waste of time.
Both men should realize that they should not take this GE13 as a man to man fight, because it has been seen as too personal now. Again we ask for what? The people may need both of these two men to helm Penang, one as an effective head of the state government while the other as an effective leader of the state opposition. Both of them are politically experienced, so why do we have to sacrifice either one of them in the name of one's ego or arrogance?
If the Penang BN chairman wants to prove that he could "administer" the state better than the current chief minister, he should prove his worth by first getting a state seat first, get himself elected into the state legislative assembly first, perform and let known to the people of his coalition's programs and alternatives, only then the people would see if he is worth to be the chief minister in five years time.
Killing any kind of "political giant" would not prove that you would be able to administer the state government well. Teng should realize that when his boss, Gerakan president Dr Koh Tsu Koon was the Penang chief minister until March 2008, how was he being treated by Umno, the dominant partner in the BN coalition? Dr Koh was labelled as a "powerless CM" by the people, as he was too subservient to Umno.
Before even thinking of taking over the Penang state government, Teng should prove to the people that he would not end up as another Koh Tsu Koon. Just look at what happened in the Penang BN Chinese New Year open house, and Teng's failure to realize that a fake BN rally in Padang Kota Lama where actually Perkasa was one of the organizers, the factional fightings in Penang Gerakan itself. What we have been observing now is Teng could not even get a state seat for himself as the choice of putting who or in which constituency is still in the hands of the Penang Gerakan state chairman Dr Teng Hock Nan who leading the stronger faction in the state, a current bitter rival of the Penang BN chief indeed.
If Teng cannot even settle his bitter rivalry within Penang Gerakan and establish a firm control in the state BN leadership, how is he going to prove that he could effective administer the state government? And talking about issuing a "death" challenge to the Penang chief minister, we affirm that Teng is still unfit to do it given to the fact that he still have no effective leadership or control over his own party and the coalition that he currently chairs.
Stop all these unhealthy self-interests political attitudes if you really wants to serve the people.
