Pakatan Ads Replace Sultan's Ads. What's the big deal?
According to an Umno state assemblyman, the "people" in his area were shocked to see that billboards with the Sultan's pictures and advertisements has been taken down and replaced with the advertisement of Pakatan Rakyat following an upcoming general elections campaign.
Another pro-BN man who claimed himself to be the chairman of the BN supporters club had also mentioned that, by taking down the Sultan's pictures and advertisements would be an act of de-respect. Another resident was also said to have mentioned that the action was shameful and disrespect to the royal institution.
To us, what is the big deal? Why making such a big fuss on this? We supposed these pro-BN elements are merely politicising the situation in order to discredit the current state government and to gain some political mileage for their own.
Whoever or whatever is on the billboard be it for advertising or campaigning has its duration and expiry dates. After these advertisements are due, they should be taken down appropriately and replaced with new ones in order to allow others the opportunities to gain public access, to offer their products and services to the people.
To prove the state government was wronged and disrespect to the royal institution, Umno or BN will need to provide some hard evidence to show that the Sultan has indeed paid for those billboards of himself for a prolonged period. Perhaps, the Sultan himself ought to come forward to tell the people if he has really booked all those billboards for a long period, what are the durations and how much has he paid for them so that those Umno and BN politicians would not use these issue to gain some political mileage form themselves, especially during the upcoming general elections campaign.
By the way, if the Sultan is the subject of the state and the people, above politics and the guardian of the constitution via his role as a constitutional monarchy, why does he need to lower himself with such advertisements on the billboards? Is the Sultan doing some businesses, is he an actor or celebrity?
