Everyone can become a Prime Minister

The former Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad had recently made a statement that the opposition parties in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition are each eyeing to become a prime minister for this country. Dr Mahathir made that statement in response to a resolution adopted at the recent PAS general assembly calling for its party president Abdul Hadi Awang to be made prime minister should Pakatan were to capture Putrajaya come next general elections.

Apart from that, an article penned down by Veera Pandiyan in the Star newspaper today had also questioned Pakatan over who would be the next prime minister as there are now two candidates-in-waiting for the said position in the opposition coalition.

So, Dr Mahathir and Veera Pandiyan, what is the big fuss of having two prime ministers-in-waiting right now? Has these two guys totally forgotten that Malaysia is a democratic nation? You can have even three or five prime ministers-in-waiting if you want, because this country holds its general elections every five years. Then it is all up to the people who will decide which party or candidate do they want to be the next prime minister of this country.

In the last US presidential elections, you could see there are in fact three presidents-in-waiting namely the then incumbent Barrack Obama (Democrat), Mitt Romney (Republican) and Gary Johnson (Libertarian). Then, finally the American people had made their choice by putting up Obama as president for the second term. This is democracy isn't so?

In the case of Malaysia, it it also the same. Everyone can become a prime minister and each political party also has their constitutional right to put forward their most suitable candidate to be a prime minister-in-waiting in event of a general elections taking place. Then, it is up to the Malaysian people out there to make their choice by casting their votes via ballot papers.

Well, in the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, it is otherwise. No democracy and no freedom at all. In the BN coalition, Umno is the most dominant political party and it is the only party in the BN who owns the right to select a candidate from its own party to be a prime minister. What other BN component parties say? MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PPP, SUPP, PBS, LDP, PBB, PRS, SPDP, Upko or LDP could not say anything because Umno is an overlord and a dominant force in the BN.

No other component parties in the BN has the right to put forward their candidate for the position of prime minister except for Umno. These BN component parties do not really have their choice and voice at all. They should in fact say yes and agree to whatever Umno dictates within the BN coalition. This is not democracy but more to a kind of dictatorship from within. The situation in the BN coalition is rather imbalance.

Whatever stated by Dr Mahathir and written by Veera Pandiyan confusing the people, making a mockery out of democracy and freedom. The leaders in the opposition Pakatan coalition had made it clear in their policy that each and every party within its coalition has their right to differ. If PKR could have a candidate for the prime minister's position, so can PAS or DAP. Even Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (KITA), Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) or Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) could also inform the voters and general public of their prime ministerial candidates. This is practically democracy.

So, stop making too much fuss and confusion about others for having too many candidates for the prime minister's job.
