15 policemen going after a piece of letter?

We were gravely surprise and shock to see that there were about 15 policemen being dispatched to the editorial office of Malaysiakini.com recently to investigate an article published in the online news portal written by a contributor named Steve Oh in support of Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar's statement on the "no compulsion in religion" made in a seminar.

What? Why did the home affairs ministry need as many as 15 policemen (most of them of officer's rank) to investigate just a piece of article contributed by a commentator? We want to ask the superior of these 15 policemen, if he is overly politically motivated in mobilising such a big team to probe the article. A blatant wastage of public fund and taxpayers' money.

We are certainly confident that most of us would remember the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) mentioned that the police force has been really short of manpower in pursuing their crime fighting effort which had resulted to the crime rate increasing in this country.

Yes, in regards of crime fighting, the police are really short-handed as most of them has been dispatched to do political work for the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN), particularly its dominant component party, Umno. What else has the police Special Branch (SB) been doing all these years?

The SB, being the most number staffed department in the police force has been tasked by the BN government to go after opposition parties and its leaders, to curb their influences, provide watch over on the opposition forces and various NGOs to feed those BN leaders with information that would indeed help BN to prepare for a next assault or purge.

According to the police, Malaysiakini has been probed under Section 298 of the Penal Code which deals with offences related to any intentions in verbal or writing mean to hurt one's religion. Come on, why didn't the police investigate Utusan Melayu instead? Didn't the police know who had started the actual provocation on the other hand? It was Utusan Melayu who had clearly misquoted whatever Nurul had said.

Nurul said, "there should be no compulsion in religion", and Utusan Melayu had in turn added the words simply to provoke by mentioning, "Melayu perlu bebas pilih agama". From here, we all should know who was the troublemaker. And yet the 15 policemen were unaware of the facts and the real situation.

When the Penang Chief Minister was deliberately attacked and threatened by Umno Youth and Perkasa members, where are the policemen on duty? Simply disappeared fro, the scene? When the Selangor Menteri Besar was ambushed by mobsters, the policemen also disappeared just like that.

When Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's team was attacked by Umno members, the policemen just simply stood there watching but when Anwar's bodyguard has no choice but to protect his boss, the later was quickly pinned downed by those policemen who had earlier stood there doing nothing.

In this case, how can the police force being called "Polis Di Raja Malaysia" when they are not doing what are supposed to be done? It should be called "Badan Kepolisan Umno" instead.

This serves as a clear reminder to the leaders of Pakatan Rakyat. If the opposition coalition were to come to power in the next general elections, the first thing they ought to do is to disband the police force and replace it with a new Public Security Force (Pasukan Keselamatan Awam) which will ensures the public security of our people is being taken care of.

We also wish to remind BN and Umno leaders, not only Steve Oh but everyone of us have our constitutional right to voice our views and opinions for or against any policies which are deemed should be scrutinised. We are paying our income tax every year, and those tax money are used to pay the salaries of all these public servants, including those policemen.
