Abolish UUCA if you are sincere, BN told

Last week the deputy higher education minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah complained of the poor response to the Speakers' Corners created at the higher education institutions. He also grumbled that in some of the universities, there is not even an activity at all since the Speakers' Corner was launched four months back.

We are just wondering why is the deputy higher education minister so surprise of the poor and non-response of the Speakers' Corner created in the universities? Is he pretending no to know it or is he really an idiot who really doesn't know what is in his government?

First of all, students with full wisdom and maturity would never go to the Speakers' Corner to try to speak their minds out because they knew that if they speak up, then they will be charged under the University and University Colleges Act (UUCA).

Under the provisions of the UUCA, university students are not allowed to criticize the government, make political commentaries, speak up freely based on their opinions, nor to take active role in supporting the political ideology of their choice.

So we want to remind Datuk Saifuddin, just in case if he is really an idiot, that as long as UUCA is still in force, the Speakers' Corner is just as dead as a graveyard stone corner.

The BN federal government is one great pretender when it comes to freedom of speech, and they thought that they could fool us like kids by putting up the Speakers' Corner for the public to "make their views heard" but in the end warned the people not to speak with their minds open.

The Umno-led BN federal government erected all those Speakers' Corners in the universities just because they wanted to feed their Umno sub contractors. They are actually not interested to provide any avenue at all for the students to speak up at all.

They reasoned that the purpose of the UUCA is to prevent the students from neglecting or abandoning their studies and opt for political activism instead while still in campus. Freedom of expression in the campuses does not mean political activism as claimed by BN and Umno leaders. Freedom of expression in the campuses encourages our students to be more creative in thinking, promote greater public participation, talents and be politically aware of their country's state of affairs.

So, why is Umno encouraging the federal government sponsored students studying overseas to show their interest in politics and establish Umno Clubs all over the world but prevented local university students from doing the same? A very clear double standard in place in our nations educational policies

We want a clear message from the Umno-led federal government. Are you sincere or not? You answer Yes or No? And if it is a Yes, then abolish the draconian UUCA immediately to allow a better participation and effective students activism in the campuses.
