Legality and relevance of SWP questioned
What is the legality and relevance of the recently established Sarawak Workers' Party (SWP)?
The SWP's registration was actually hijacked from the Sabah People's Front (SPF) when some of the SWP leaders had by some means managed to take over the documentations of the SPF and worked it out to transform the SPF into SWP.
This has been confirmed lately by some leaders of the SPF when its party deputy president Osman Enting came forward and lodged an official complaint against the conspirators of the conversion to SWP. The Registrar of Societies (ROS) however, refused to acknowledge the SPF complaint citing that the process of conversion from SPF to SWP has been carried out accordingly within the regulations and as required by the Societies Act.
The ROS however, failed to provide any evidence of the proper conversion of SPF to SWP when asked to do so. We are wondering why ROS could allow a Sabah-based political party be hijacked and transformed into a Sarawak-based party instead in such a very quick process.
Is it because SWP and its party leaders are BN friendly and that is why the conversion process took only a while? Just look at the application for registration by other political parties which are not regarded as BN friendly nor link to any BN leaders. It took months and sometimes years in order to get registered.
Few examples of BN friendly parties being registered very fast previously were the Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM), Malaysian Indian United Party (MIUP) and Makkal Sakhti Party (MSP). It shows that the ROS is being bias in their duties and responsibilities, as they pick and choose the political parties preferred by BN and delay the the applications of political parties which are opposed to BN.
The other thing, is SWP really a political party for the workers in the state there? What we knew is the SWP was formed out of political revenge and rivalry against Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), a Sarawak BN component party which had fallen out of favour with Sarawak chief minister and state BN chairman Abdul Taib Mahmud. It looks clear that SWP has the intention and ambition to replace PRS in the Sarawak BN coalition.
As such the word "Workers" in the SWP is a mere political dressing and it has nothing to do with fighting for the workers' rights or welfare. SWP is in fact a confused group of loose politicians aimed at avenging their political defeat after they were systematically purged from the PRS. SWP is currently dominated by family members of S'ng Chee Hua who had previously led one of the main factions within the PRS.
PRS is currently led by Dr James Masing who had earlier purged the S'ng family from the party.
