Penang Swiftlet Nests: MCA's sabotage and political instigation exposed!

On 2 September 2010 last year, the Putrajaya's both National Council for Local Government as well as the Housing and Local Government Ministry had decided that new swiftlet nest farms would not be allowed at heritage sites in Penang and Melaka while those existing ones in these two states would have to clear out within three years starting from the above date.

Penang State Executive Councillor Chow Kon Yeow had said that the state government would not wait to the last minute of the grace period is over before taking any action. That means, those existing swiftlet nest farm operators would have to start taking their initiatives now to get their transitions started.

However, the MCA "constituency coordinators" for Pengkalan Kota and Komtar, PC Loh and CT Loh had both instigated these swiftlet nest farm operators with wrong information citing that they are going to be chased out by the state government and stern actions would be taken against them. To ensure this event turn sour, these two "de facto state assemblymen" also told the people that the state government is going to forcefully tear down their nest farms on that day.

As the result, few of those swiftlet nest farm operators were cheated and they eventually followed the MCA leaders' instructions to come out to protest and demonstrate at the the Komtar Walk recently.

Please be informed that the decisions to ban the operations of the swiftlet nest farms in heritage buildings came from the National Council for Local Government as well as the Housing and Local Government Ministry where MCA has very close connections with.

The Minister of Housing and Local Government is Datuk Chor Chee Heung, a senior top MCA leader, and in his capacity as the minister, Datuk Chor also sits in the National Council for Local Government with the prime minister and also the deputy prime minister.

This signifies that Datuk Chor is one of the top decision makers in coming up with the plan to ban the entire operations of swiftlet nest farms in heritage buildings in Penang and Melaka in line with the Unesco's policies and requirements to ensure the heritage certification is maintained for these two states' historical buildings.

The Penang state government is merely following the instructions from the National Council for Local Government and the ministry in order to ensure that its Unesco heritage certification is maintained.

If it is seen that the operators of these swiftlet nest farms would have difficulties in shifting their farms to suitable locations, then MCA being the major role player in the National Council for Local Government and the ministry, should come up with some contingency plans to help these businesses from the beginning instead of putting all those blame onto the state government.

And if the Penang state government were to ignore the instructions from the National Council for Local Government and the ministry and the state's heritage certification were to be disqualified, just because they wanted to help those swiftlet nest farm operators, MCA would still blame the state government because it wants to protect the interest of these businesses.

It is all the same, MCA is playing politics against the state government. Actually, MCA could play their role in the National Council for Local Government and the ministry by asking Unesco for some kind of exemption or leniency but they did not do so in order to sabotage the state government and use the people to organize anti-government protests and demonstrations saying that the state government is threatening the people's income, wellbeing and so on.

We wish to remind MCA and the other BN leaders to stop fooling the people around. We have had enough of your political tricks and cheating our people. Prove your worth instead of using our people as your political shield.
