EC rejected Mafrel's bid to be observer in the Sarawak state election

The Election Commission (EC) has decided not to give accreditation to Mafrel (Malaysians for Free and Fair Elections) to be an independent observer of the 10th Sarawak state election, polling of which is on April 16.

EC secretary Datuk Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria said this was because Mafrel had failed to fully comply to EC's requirements. "Among them are for Mafrel and its affiliates to be non-partisan in their work," he said in a statement here Friday yesterday.

Previously the EC has also rejected Mafrel's application to observe the Sibu parliamentary by-election citing that Mafrel had often sided with the opposition Pakatan Rakyat. Mafrel however, proceeded with its observation on limited basis.

Well, EC says Mafrel failed to be non-partisan and non-compliance of certain EC requirements. We want to ask the EC, are they being non-partisan in discharging their responsibilities all this while?

In so many occasions EC has been seen as sided with the Barisan Nasional (BN) when certain electoral conflicts and disputes arises. In most by-elections, the EC went after the opposition parties and their fraternal parties who put up their flags and banners to support their contesting counterpart, while closed one eye on the BN side.

And knowing that the home minister and registrar of societies had decided to temporary suspend the approval of Pakatan Rakyat's bid to officially register itself as a formal opposition coalition, the EC had kept on stressing that Pakatan should register itself first before letting their component parties joining the campaigning in support of their contesting counterpart.

Okay, since the BN has EC in their fold (as a division under the prime minister's department), why not Pakatan take up Mafrel as its electoral think tank? And if this happens, EC should then stop labelling Mafrel as not adhering to its requirement.

EC also didn't adhere to its own principle of being an independent, fair and just organization running and managing the electoral process. So, why talk about Mafrel?

EC is still in denial mode.
