Cabinet inter-faith panel is dead

The cabinet's Special Committee to Promote Inter-Religious Harmony and Understanding (SCPIRHU) which was initiated by prime minister Najib Razak and put under the charge of Dr Koh Tsu Koon is now defunct and considered dead.

This is because some extremist groups who participated in the committee had objected to the use of the term "inter-religious" reasoning that their religion is greater than the others and they should not sit equally with the other faiths.

Besides objection to the panel's term, they also wanted Dr Koh, who is the minister in charge of national unity and currently supervising the SCPIRHU to be replace by Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom, who is the minister in charge of Islamic affairs.

Dr Koh who is also the Gerakan president is seem to be powerless in his effort to ensure the success of the SCPIRHU because of the extremists' view on their supreme stature of their religion over the others.

The first meeting was held on 4 April and the subsequent meeting was called off due to the boycott by leaders of some extremist religious groups who demanded Dr Koh to be removed from supervision and the panel's term and role to be changed.

Apart from that, lawmakers from the BN coalition, particularly those from Umno were not supportive of such inter-faith panel fearing that they will be label less-religious if they support the said committee.

It means, the supremacist still refused to back down on their extremism and insist that their stature should be higher than the others.

We want to ask Dr Koh and Gerakan, none of your BN coalition partners are supporting your efforts for a better Malaysia and to promote the idea of a fair and equal Malaysian. So, why are you still in the BN fold. They dislike you, they condemn you, their sideline you and they made you a senator and minister, just for the sake of doing so. You are powerless and you do not even have a say in your own national unity plans.

You wanted unity but those extremist out there are against it, because they said by achieving national unity, equality will be achieved, therefore their supreme stature will be gone.

You are powerless, you cannot perform effectively because you are only a "minister without portfolio". Your national unity plan is just a window dressing. Stop being in a denial mode. Wake up and look at the real situation.

If you continue to be like this, Gerakan and you will remain irrelevant forever.

EC should ask ROS to register Pakatan quickly

The Election Commission (EC) had recently advised the current opposition pact, Pakatan Rakyat comprising PAS, PKR and DAP, to register their coalition so that they could use their logo in the coming general election. EC deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said the coalition should be registered because the opposition parties were always seen violating regulations of the election campaign, especially on the use of their logo. Datuk Wan Ahmad seems to be overly ignorant and too forgetful on this issue. The EC deputy chairman should ask the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to quickly register the Pakatan instead of calling on Pakatan to register itself. Pakatan Rakyat had earlier send in their formal application to register itself as a coalition of political parties since November 2009 and ROS has yet to register the said entity till today after delaying and creating so many hassles for more than a year. USM fiasco a shame

I read and heard with irritation and felt disgusted with the fiasco committed by the apex status university called Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) which caused untold anguish to the affected students and their parents. If this happened in Japan, the Vice-Chancellor would have done the honourable thing - take full responsibilty and leave, but here in Malaysia, as expected, the blame is shifted here and there, trying to make someone a scapegoat. By the way, would there be any racist or sabotage elements involved? Those who are responsible for this fiasco should be sacked or expelled immediately.

No action against YBs without speaker's consent

Penang assembly Speaker Law Choo Kiang said the police and attorney-general (AG) cannot prosecute any elected representatives for any wrongdoings committed in the House. Law said the authorities cannot act on the assemblypersons without the agreement of the speaker. "So this clearly cancels the (planned) charge against Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer for sedition under the 1948 Sedition Act," the PKR Bukit Tambun assemblyperson said in a statement yesterday. Law said a warning based on the assembly's standing orders has been issued to Rayer not to repeat the remark "Umno celaka" (damned Umno), which the latter allegedly uttered in the House on May 20.
