What is multiculturalism?

As we know, every one of us is exploring to achieve harmony and what is the most effective method of achieving it.

We see a few wise and capable leaders throughout time and the world who were able to reconcile differences and unite their groups so that these groups were able to be successful. A small group like a family was able to become prosperous while a group as large as a country was able to become wealthy and powerful. Therefore, those who have the ability to bring harmony among their people play a very important role in the achievement of their groups’ unity.

Why were these leaders able to reconcile the differences and unite their various groups and countries? This is because they treated others with sincerity and compassion. One who is truly sincere can move others. If one cannot do so, it is because one is not sincere enough.

One who has utmost sincerity can move all beings. One can even move a person who has numerous afflictions and bad habits so that this person would at least somewhat restrain his or her behavior. This contributes to social and political stability, world peace and well being of all people and such action is very positive and constructive.

Our country had achieved independence 52 years ago and Umno as well as Barisan Nasional (BN) had ruled our nation for more than 50 years now. But our country with multiracial and multicultural background has yet to fully achieve our independence in terms of inter ethnic harmony, unity, non-racial approach, tolerance and respect.

Umno and BN (which current consist of MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PPP, PBB, SUPP, SPDP, PRS, PBS, Upko, LDP and PBRS) till today still administers our nation via divide and rule policies which uphold the supremacy of one race over the others. Umno is always talking about ketuanan Melayu and demonstrating their supremacist characteristics in public, while MCA stresses about Chinese unity, MIC on Indian unity, PBB on Melanau unity, SPDP and PRS on Dayak unity, Upko on Kadazandusun unity and so on.

For those BN component parties who insist on non-racial approaches like Gerakan and PPP, they are always being seen as threatening the positions of their race-based component parties because of their continuous stress on Bangsa Malaysia and the need to strive for a more non-racial approach in national policies. As such, as long as race-based parties still remain strong in the BN fold, all Gerakan and PPP efforts from within the coalition will prove useless and ineffective.

Various policies, rules, laws and implementation today still demonstrates racial division instead of racial unity. The New Economic Policy (NEP) which was initially aim to give one race a monopoly in some sectors and programs is now seen as mere failure as that particular race still lack far behind despite Umno’s continuous claim that they are always championing that particular race.

From here, you can see if Umno and BN are truly sincere in making our nation into one, then there will be no suspicions, racism and ethnically divide amongst us today. If that so, all of us will be addressed as Malaysians instead of identifying one with their particular race, religion and cultural background.

However, after 52 years of independence, there are still no Malaysians in our country. We are still called Malay, Chinese, Indian, Pujabi, Kadazan, Murut, Melanau and so on. Besides, racial equality is also none in our nation where we were borned and breed for so many years. An ungrateful nation towards its own soil and people!

Therefore, in order to fully achieve our nationhood and our Malaysian identity, the ruling coalition called BN ought to be sincere in implementing their policies and programs which are aimed in promoting national unity and their so-called 1Malaysia. This slogan called 1Malaysia will remain a useless slogan if the BN federal government is insincere and merely run this program as a cosmetic and window dressing game.

Well, if we cannot see their sincerity and effectiveness in doing so, we shall make up our minds to go for the alternatives.
