Karpal: One Candidate, One Seat

Of until recently, the DAP National Chairman Karpal Singh had strongly emphasized that all party candidates contesting in the next general election should only go for one seat, be it parliament or state legislative assembly.

And he had mentioned it again during the recently concluded party national convention, citing that everyone should be given the opportunity to serve.

We agreed with Karpal's resolution that a candidate should only contest one seat, parliament or state up to the party leadership to decide. A candidate contesting should not opt for more than one seats like having the later as a spare tyre just in case he or she loses the initial one.

If you a candidate gets to win both the seats contested, we are figuring how is he going to serve two constituencies at one time and on whether he or she is able to divide his time for both sides. Then, in the end of the day, he or she will have to disappoint the other in order to serve whoever he prefers or prioritize.

This scenario is not healthy to the fact that opportunities for other leaders in the party to grow or to serve the people would be limited. Furthermore, it is also right to consider such practice as some kind of undemocratic value or policy which would not reflect well to the party in long term.

In general, our people would view this as "if you contest and won both seats, you will get two salaries and if you are appointed an Exco member or Minister, you will end up richer by three salaries plus, plus a number of allowance, benefits and perks". This is exactly how the lay people would view this.

The people would not even bother to understand if you were to undergo a tremendous pressure working on too many positions and responsibilities because they are not politicians themselves. What our people look forward is to have a good service level available at constituencies where these members of parliament or state assemblymen were elected by the people.

So, we support Karpal's call for One Candidate, One Seat allocation. That's it!
