901 Campaign: Can KDN and the police guarantee us safety and no provocation?

According to the home minister and Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein, the organizers of the 901-Free Anwar Campaign planned on Monday next week must guarantee that the gathering will be peaceful and that they will have to convince the police that whatever they are planning to do will not affect the people's safety and public order.

The other issue is, can the police and the home ministry (KDN) in turn guarantee our people that there will be no provocation or whatsoever brutality on the police side and ensure the safety of the campaign participants?

We had seen all those injuries and a death in the Bersih 2.0 last year where it was the police who had provoked the protesters and turned some part of the rally into an angry crowd, just because the police uses force and brutally assaulted these participants even if they were there walking and protesting in a peaceful manner. Remember, no one will get angry for nothing unless he or she is being provoked, harmed or threatened and this is one particular human chemistry that the authorities must not deny.

In this case, if the authorities cannot convince our people that there will be no provocation and brutality on the police side and the safety of the people is guaranteed, then international and local human rights organizations must be allowed to observe the situation to ensure fair and just reporting in event of any mishaps occurs.

Yes, we agreed with the Umno vice-president that this is a new socio-political landscape which requires maturity, courage and a lot of patience, but can the authorities really adhere to this as well, instead of start shooting with their guns and water canons in a very fast phase?

The 901-Free Anwar Campaign is being held to coincide with the High Court's verdict in the sodomy trial of parliamentary opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim which is scheduled to be made on the 9th January next week.
