What makes a Patriot?

While we admire those who give their time, effort and at times lives in the service of defending the nation, we are very certain that patriotism means even more than that.
Patriotism is not just about waving and hanging so many flags, singing the national songs, donning the national colours, waving the “parang” or “keris”, waving placards, banners or burning effigies, shouting and yelling here and there about one race supremacy, demonstrating one’s superiority over the other, blindly supporting the government and so on. Such simplistic and unbecoming displays do not at all reflect the true face of being a patriot.
The fact here is, all decent, hard working, tax-paying Malaysian citizens are patriots of this nation and they love this nation more than anyone else does.
Those who had businesses and trades help to create economic growth by expanding our commerce, forging new partnerships and dealings with other companies to help strengthen the industry that they are involve with, thus helping to create more jobs and come up with continuous improvement that enhance socio economic development are also true patriots of this nation.
The real patriot is the person who goes to work on daily basis and who makes the most of each day in order to be productive every minute. He takes on various tasks with all his heart, soul and commitment and does not quit just because the going gets tough or difficult.
The real patriot is someone who does not give in to absenteeism, who does not rush to take a day off or more just because he is feeling slightly under the weather or because he does not feel like going to work on that day or he didn’t like his boss at all.
Real patriots is someone who knows what are respect and equality, accord these practices to everyone around him at every minute, giving due recognition to the existence of all mankind, human rights, all ethnics and various religions here in this nation.
The real patriot is someone who contributes, he works with commitment for what he is given, believes strongly in principles of meritocracy and does not expect hand-outs, rewards or favours from the state.
Real patriots are therefore people like all of us. For in our silent actions, we do more to aid the development and the social advancement of our beloved nation than any amount of flag waving and slogan chanting can ever hope to achieve.
Therefore, we as Malaysians in this country call Malaysia are the true patriots based on our daily commitment, practice, vision and wisdom.
Questioning our loyalty and patriotism to our nation would means questioning the sovereignty of this country, thus reflecting the real unpatriotic actions of those who did so.
