Critical talk show: 98.8 radio host Jamaluddin and CEO Wong sacked
Star RFM has sacked popular talk-show host Jamaluddin Ibrahim and the chief executive officer of his 98.8 channel, Wong Lai Ngo.
The 98.8 shakeup erupted last month after Star RFM suspended Jamaluddin and his colleagues following a letter from industry regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
MCMC had said it was not responsible for the removal of the 98.8 staff, but was merely investigating the station for alleged breach of licence conditions following alleged “complaints’" about Jamaluddin's programme.
MCMC did not say how many complaints it had received, or gave any indication as to who the complainants were.
On Tuesday, senior programme manager Tan Chia Yong's service was terminated. According to Star RFM, the MCMC had found that Jamaluddin's "Hi Malaysia!" radio show had on Aug 13 "violated regulations" stated in the station's broadcasting licence.
Jamaluddin and Wong received their termination letters on Wednesday. In Jamaluddin’s letter, Star RFM said the MCMC found the company in breach of licence conditions 10.2 and 10.3 during the Aug 13 program.
In the letter to Jamaluddin, it is stated: “The company therefore, holds you, as the presenter/producer, accountable and responsible for the said breach/offence and other breaches. With that, we regret to inform you that your employment with the company is terminated with immediate effect.” (Agencies)
