Why did people protest and demonstrate?

We are very much disturbed by the statement made recently by Kedah Umno deputy chairman and deputy trade minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir blaming the opposition and Bersih 2.0 for the massive protests and demonstrations in the country.

The first thing that Mukhriz is trying to avoid is the weakness of his party, Umno in governing this country.

We must acknowledge the reasons and factors behind such protests, demonstrations and why did our people came out to stage their protests and demonstrations against the Umno-led BN government.

Remember, people do not simply protest and demonstrate for nothing. In every move or action, there are bound to be reasons and factors that resulted to such reactions.

It is because of injustice and the draconian rule implemented by the present government that had deliberately caused much dissent from our people and the rising popularity of the opposition leaders in this country. Well, this is democracy. If you are unfair towards the people, they have their democratic rights to show express their disappointment and disapproval on the way you do all those things.

Mukhriz's statement shows that he disapprove the democratic system which provides avenues for people to state their stand and opinions freely and justly. We as citizens of this country have our constitutional rights to voice our thoughts, make statements and give opinions on policies that does not carries any weight.

Just imagine if Mukhriz were to become the prime minister of this country. What will become of this nation if he really does take this office? It will go back to the then Mahathir era and couple with even worst draconian laws. Do we want all these to repeat after we work so hard to achieve the 2008 electoral tsunami? We are certainly not going to let this happen.

As such, having the so-called "Peaceful Assembly Bill" to suppress the people's voice is indeed undemocratic, unjust, unconstitutional and worst of all draconian. By the way, are they really going to repeal the ISA and the other older restrictive laws as promised? There's still no sign of any effort of doing that till today.
