Another Gerakan leader left the party

This week, we informed that another Gerakan leader has decided to call it quit after years being with the party, citing of being sick of Umno's continuous racial politics and dominance in the Barisan Nasional coalition.

Gerakan central committee member Dr Hsu Dar Ren had announced his resignation from the party on Tuesday. According to Dr Hsu, he made his decision with a heavy heart and also said that Gerakan is a political party with good ideology to establish a fair and equitable society in Malaysia.

Yes, Dr Hsu was correct in saying that. It is true that Gerakan is a good party because of its Malaysian-based objectives and principles, but somehow within the framework of the BN coalition which is dominated by the race-based and extremist Umno, it would be impossible for Gerakan to achieve and advance its ideas effectively.

Under Umno, the entire nation is being torn apart almost daily and the racial relations has never been so worst as now. Gerakan had worked very hard to promote and advance its ideas of Bangsa Malaysia and Anak Malaysia concepts but to no avail as race-based parties like the powerful Umno still dominates the BN framework. The others are the Chinese-based MCA and the Indian-based MIC who are still influential within the coalition.

So, where is Gerakan's position? In aftermath of the 12th general election on 2008, strings of prominent Gerakan leaders had left the party to either pursue their ideas and principles with the opposition Pakatan Rakyat or had joined various NGOs for their course.

The party had on several occasion promised to reform but to-date nothing as change and the party is still being carry on by conservative leaders who are duty bound to follow whatever Umno says and dictates.

With this, is there a need for a Gerakan in the BN anyway? Unless it leaves the BN coalition and carry on its own or to join hands with the other opposition parties to pursue their ideas and beliefs.

Unfortunately, its party president Dr Koh Tsu Koon did not want to give-up is ministerial post and the back-door entered senatorial seat.

Then, what can Gerakan do for our people anyway?
