Has racism spread into education and scholarships?

Image
Meddling in politics with racism, extremism and hatred isn't that enough for Perkasa, Pembela, Perkida or even for GAPS, another new firebrand of extreme racist organization in making. Failing to get any mass support to rally behind their racist organism, these racists and extremists organizations are now putting their hate jargons into the education systems and scholarship awards as well. Weeks ago, when several parties highlighted plights of high scorers in SPM and STPM who failed to obtain their government scholarships despite being top in their examination results, these racists and extremists organizations and their leaders were quick to jump into action trying to justify that those scholarship aren't actually for any bright students. It was DAP who first highlighted the plight of these high scorers who were denied their rightful scholarships, then MCA jumped into the wagon and telling our people that they will help to fix thing up while warning DAP not to highlight these ...

Does the confusion exist?

Image
By Lim Sue Goan The war of words between Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong over the Public Service Department (PSD) scholarship distribution has confused the people. Wee said that it is the greatest confusion in history while Nazri said that the PSD officers have been awarding the scholarships based on a set of strict guidelines and there is no confusion at all. He also said that the unfair scholarship distribution allegation is more likely a misunderstanding. Nazri said that among the appeals made by 59 unsuccessful candidates through the MCA Youth, the best result was ranked 401 and thus, they were not awarded the PSD overseas degree scholarships. However, the MCA said that the 59 students have scored straight A+ and therefore, they should study in overseas instead of local universities. Nazri explained that the minimum qualification for the scholarships is 9As and one is not necessarily be awarded a schola...

Anger grows against ā€˜selfishā€™ Gerakan boss

Image
The resentment in Gerakan is growing and its party members are beginning to question the leadership of Dr Koh Tsu Koon as party president as he had till today failed to outline any plans to revive the party badly defeated in the last general elections. "Dr Koh took up the senatorship and became a federal minister, but what has he done for the party so far?", ask a local party leader. By Humayun Kabir There is growing resentment among Gerakan members towards their president Koh Tsu Koon and an emergency general meeting may be called to remove him. Former party youth vice-chief S Paranjothy said several party leaders told him that Koh must be axed to save the sinking Gerakan. The Taman Ehsan branch chief claimed that the president was more interested in safeguarding his own political position in the federal government and had ignored the problems in the party. Paranjothi recalled how former party chief Dr Lim Keng Yaik had advised Koh to concentrate on building the party at the...

A racist Umno accusing others of being racist?

Image
When the DAP announced recently that it is doubling its effort in getting into Malay majority areas to spread its ideology and All-Malaysian concept to the people there, Umno is quick to come forward to mention that DAP is a racist party aimed at splitting the Malays and contaminate Islam. Look who is talking about racism now! A racist party saying that another party is racist. While DAP has been openly accepting all races into its fold and they are still doing now, Umno is still practicing one-race politics in its party membership and policies. Umno's current agenda is to strive for only one race called Ketuanan Melayu (actually it is more of a Ketuanan Umno ). For decades, DAP has always maintained itself as a truly multi-racial party despite there being more non-Malays than the Malays. Throughout many general elections, the party had even came up with several prominent Malay candidates to contest for parliamentary and state seats. In the beginning, Umno had accused the DAP for ...

An ungrateful MCA and its ineffectiveness

Image
MCA Youth has accused the DAP of exploiting the controversy over the annual award of public scholarships by the Public Service Department (PSD) to outstanding students. MCA Youth secretary-general Chai Kim Sen said the opposition party was only good at instigation to curry favour with voters but had so far failed to propose solutions to the annual problem. We would like to ask the MCA youth secretary-general, what does he mean by instigation to curry favour with voters? DAP was doing what is best in order to get the attention from the federal government, particularly the education ministry to resolve this issue. And when DAP has brought up this issue in public for the attention of the education ministry, the MCA being part of the federal government was so ungrateful but instead accused DAP of exploiting the matter. So Chai, since you had already mentioned that this has been an annual problem, why didn't your party resolve it at the first place? Why, the MCA youth chief Wee Ka Siong...

It's already "a norm" now. What about others and what if it really happens?

According to the Umno supreme council member and minister in the prime minister's department Nazri Aziz, the authorities cannot take any action against Perkasa leader Ibrahim Ali for threat of violence, war and bloodshed because it has became a norm in the current political scenario. So does Nazri's words really represents the federal government or are these merely his "personal views" like it has been mentioned by other minister before that. What if anything really happens, but surely not from Ibrahim's side. What if other leaders who are more to welcome an open violence, war and bloodshed with Perkasa? What if other NGOs too are forming militia units to protect themselves from Perkasa's so-called recently established " Briged Setia Negara "? What if one day people are fed up with the current constitutional monarchy system and wanted our nation to become a republic? By then, when action is taken against all these (if it happens...) non-Perkasa eleme...

Greater tolerance

By Lim Mun Fah We have just celebrated Wesak Day, a festival promoting mercy and world peace. On that day, politicians, religious practitioners and community leaders promoted tolerance, harmony and mutual respect while spreading love and praying for peace and prosperity. It is undoubtedly a good thing. It is because we are very clear about what is happening in our society. When racists remarks are still rampant and the word "jihad" was blurted out by the Perkasa leader, aren't we in great need of calling for greater rationality and being determined to say "no" to all words and deeds of racists? Yes, we must not turn a blind eye and let our society suffer more hostility and harassment. Religious practitioners advocating religious harmony should unite regardless of religion and race. Politicians advocating peace and moderation should also stand together regardless of political party and faction. We must clearly express our disgust and disdain over the words and de...

Weekend English classes? What for?

The proposal made by the deputy prime minister who is also the education minister, Muhyddin Yassin recently that schools would be instructed to organize weekend English classes or tuitions to facilitate students who are weak in this language had received strong objections from all parties. While we all do agree that the students' proficiency in the English language is still lacking behind, despite so many efforts in promoting and enhancing the use of this language, conducting such weekend classes or tuitions are not the concrete solution. Even the teachers' union and the parents are against such efforts as they had already saw the ineffectiveness in the previous programs. It created more problems and burdens to these teachers who are now already overworked and coupled with a lots of unnecessary documentations in their daily work. And so does the students, with no enough rests or peace of mind during weekends. Furthermore, we do not think that the majority of schools are still l...

Minister said seditious remarks now are a norm

Recently, Umno supreme council member and minister in the prime minister's department Datuk Nazri Aziz told the press that no action can be taken against Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali over his warnings of violent attacks against the Christian community as such remarks are now a Malaysian norm. Wow! Is this what the minister from Umno had really said? A very, very indeed a lame explanation or just another lame excuse to do so? And since such seditious remarks had now became a kind of Malaysian norm, does it mean that we all can make insensitive and seditious remarks in reply or to retaliate what the Perkasa leader had said or threatened? And if this minister's word represents the entire federal government's decision, then let us do it in both open air and in the cyberspace as well. We would like to openly challenge Datuk Nazri in this matter! Utusan Malaysia with its continuous racist and hate message in its publications, corruption has been going on rampantly and it is not goin...

The way KDN treated their own paper and the others

The home affairs ministry (KDN) has slapped Utusan Malaysia with a warning letter for publishing an unsubstantiated front-page article alleging a Christian plot to usurp Islam as the religion of the federation, which sparked a furore among the countryā€™s majority Muslims and minority Christians. And while Utusan Malaysia was only given a warning letter stating that "pihak kami meminta agar tuan jangan mengulanginya lagi" , the ministry's treatment on China Press previously was completely different. Previously, when China Press was reported to had published an inaccurate news purportedly claiming that a (corrupted) inspector-general of police who was still holding office at that time would be replaced, the KDN took action by providing an ultimatum to the Chinese language newspaper to either suspend its editor-in-chief or to face a possible suspension onto its publication for several months. Chinese Press at that time has no other choice but to issue a two-weeks suspension ...

Ban on Utusan by Penang state government justified

Image
Today, a report in a local newspaper indicated that both the Penang Press Club and Penang Media Club were against the ban on Utusan Malaysia instituted by the Penang State Government and said that the action by the state was against press freedom. Against press freedom? Let us ask these two news clubs again. Do you think that the actions by Utusan in publishing messages and articles instilling hatred and promoting extreme racism in our country is a correct kind of journalistic work? Does Utusan really practices journalistic principle in their reporting and article publications? We really hope that the presidents of the two news clubs would think about it all over again whether Utusan is really a newspaper publisher or not. To most of the people, Utusan is no more a newspaper publisher nor a people's paper at all. This Umno-own newspaper does not belong to the category of a good journalism. It likes to instill hatred, promote disunity, encourage provocation, anger and violence, enha...

Almost 54 years, racism and violence are on the rise

Image
After almost 54 years of independence, our nation call Malaysia is still immature and it is getting more immature as days goes by. During the post-independence period, Malaysians from all walks of life came up in a unified identity calling themselves Malaysians, but as this nation grows older, its maturity is going backwards. Umno had rule this nation since 1957 and for decades our people continuously placed their support and vote for Umno and their ruling partners in the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition until 2008, where our people had bravely came up to say enough is enough on the growing racial tensions here, just because of Umno's rising racism and its discriminatory policies. Radical Malay and Islamic groups in now coming out to voice their dissatisfaction over their lack of economic opportunities and claiming that their race is under siege from the other ethnic groups, despite this nation being ruled by Umno for almost 54 years. What? After almost 54 years of Umno's rule a...

MCA mahu ketengahkan perkasa Cina

Image

Stop bickering about "state cabinet" posts, PKR told

Image
Ever since the Sarawak DAP chairman Wong Ho Leng made an announcement on the state shadow cabinet for the opposition Pakatan Rakyat coalition in the state legislative assembly, PKR has never stop bickering over its share on the allocation of the shadow cabinet's portfolios. It seems that PKR wanted a larger share over the portfolios in the shadow cabinet and they are asking for more eventhough they only have three state assemblymen. Well, let's be fair to all and take these facts out for everyone to judge. Prior to the Sarawak state elections, DAP has been making its preparations since July 2010, design and developing its own campaign strategies and on how to make inroads to targeted areas. Besides, the state DAP had fully swing its election machinery into full scale since mid of last year with active programmes and highlights, such as seminars, trainings, on the ground visits, house to house review, getting to know the electorates, organizing meetings with the people on regula...

NUJ president sacked by Utusan

Image
The journalistic community was dealt with a severe blow on Labour Day when the National Union of Journalist (NUJ) president Mohamed Hatta Wahari was sacked by his employer Utusan Malaysia for criticizing on the Umno-owned newspaper over its imbalance and racist reporting. According to Hatta, he was terminated from his senior journalist position on April 21, a week after the newspaperā€™s disciplinary inquiry decided he was guilty of breaching the terms and conditions of his employment. We would like to urge Hatta to carry on with his quest for press freedom. We also urge all journalists to stand by this man who have been fighting tirelessly for the welfare and rights of all journalists and our people. Eventhough he is employed as a journalist in Utusan Malaysia, he risked his career to stood up against his employer who publishes regular racist and hate messages in its publications and fought against various injustice and unfair policies on journalism. On proposal made by the information...

What a double standard police force

Image
When we heard of reports that those who gathered for the May Day (Labour Day) celebrations to demand a better and fair wage for all workers has been arrested, we are all saddened with the fact the the police force and authorities has been acting in a double standard manner. When the racially extremist organization Perkasa held violent demonstrations and threatened the people in their rallies which are mostly without any permit, members of the police force who were deployed to control them just stood by and did nothing, just watching and some of the policemen were also seen chatting happily with these racist participants. May Day, or known as Labour Day internationally, is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social achievements of our workers. It is also declared a public holiday by the federal government means that the workers' rights are truly recognized. For decades, our workers has been celebrating the Labour day with marches, together with banners demanding better r...
