Post-GE13, Racism On The Rise
The 13th general elections (GE13) had just concluded, with Barisan Nasional (BN) only managed to win in a slimmer majority, while Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has won even more seats now and had successfully obtained a firmer control on our nation's two most industrialized states, Selangor and Penang, while making more inroads into BN strongholds.
In the immediate reaction on BN's slim majority, the coalition's chairman who is also the Umno president Najib Razak made an initial statement saying that the BN's slimmer majority was not actually PR's gain but more to a sort of "Chinese Tsunami", referring to the even worst defeat that the three BN Chinese-based component parties, MCA, Gerakan and SUPP had suffered.
Then later, Umno's mouthpiece called Utusan Malaysia then vented its anger onto the Chinese community by sarcastically asking "Apa lagi Cina mahu?" So, is the outcome of the GE13 really a typical Chinese swing? In the previous rallies organized by the Opposition parties prior to the GE13 day, those who had turned up consist not only the Chinese community, but a more mixture of many races. To be honest, we have not seen any Opposition-organized rallies which are being fully attended by only the "Chinese" Malaysians and not even a single "Malay" nor "Indian" Malaysians around. The situation that we have been observing is, most of the the Opposition-organized rallies has been attended by a large crowd of Malaysians only, and they are not dominated by only one race.
Looks like the post GE13 situation has been racially motivated in order to shift the anger from the BN against the Chinese community over the massive defeats suffered by MCA, Gerakan and SUPP, at the expense of the Malay community at large. The BN, particularly Umno, is now trying to drum up support from the Malay community by keeping up with its claim that the Chinese community is on the verge to take over the entire nation and the Opposition leaders are doing their level best in getting the special rights of the Malays and Bumiputras as well as Islam to be abolished from the Federal Constitution.
By doing this, Umno strongly believe that they would be able to drum up the Malays hatred onto the Chinese community. MCA in the meantime had further made the entire situation worst by saying that the electorate has actually voted in a two-race system (a Malay government and a Chinese opposition) instead of a two-party system. Leaders of MCA and Gerakan had later announced that due to the fact that their parties has been rejected by the "Chinese", they will not take up any government positions. MCA has went to the extend by announcing the closure of many of its service centers nationwide, citing frustration over the "Chinese" electorate who had "betrayed" them.
The post-GE13 has made the racial politics in our nation even worst than ever. Umno has turned into a far more right wing and extreme type of political party by isolating itself even further away from being a national and secular-type of political party. Umno is now showing off to all Malaysians now that they look set to form a next Malay-based federal government without the participation from its non-Malay component parties which has been defeated and had officially declined any government positions.
Worst still now, a few non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with close connections with Umno has openly called on the Malay and Bumiputra communities to boycott businesses and products that are being manufactured or sold by a few major companies owned by the Chinese community reasoning that they have been heavily funding the Opposition coalition-PR during GE13.
Many of us would have agreed, if not for the GE13, racism would not have rise into such an alarming situation which might even bring our nation backwards if the politics were to turn from bad to worst and if a racial clash were to take place. Some people had even said, the GE13 should not be held in the first place. The fact that is, this is a democratic nation and the general elections must be held when the parliamentary tenure expires every four to five years.
Whether the politics here has been racially motivated or racially politicized lies on the politicians themselves. In this case, the worsen racial politics in our nation here has been drummed up by Umno in particular following the defeats of its Chinese-based partners in the BN coalition, mainly MCA, Gerakan and SUPP.
Then, who were the problematic ones? They were the MCA, Gerakan and SUPP. From where the problems in MCA, Gerakan and SUPP lies? It is from within the BN coalition of which these three Chinese-based political parties are members of. What are the typical "illness" or "sickness" that they have been suffering from? Everyone knew it, but leaders of MCA, Gerakan and SUPP are still in the dark on why have they been rejected twice, first in 2008 and now 2013. They knew it too, but had since refused to accept the fact that it was their association with Umno that had jeopardized their reputations. Umno on the other hand too has denied any wrongdoing that had caused them more than half of the votes gone, but instead blame MCA, Gerakan and SUPP for their own failure, failure to convince the community that they had claimed to represent all this while.
The blaming game in the BN coalition continues. Umno blamed MCA, Gerakan ad SUPP for the slim majority, while MCA, Gerakan and SUPP blamed the Chinese community (voters) for "betraying" them and in the end of the day, the entire BN organism would take Chinese community for a daily bashing, accusing that there are fanatics out there who are going to skin the Malays and Bumiputras as well as to abolish the Federal Constitution and so on. Looks like everyone in the BN coalition are now at the lost on why did they obtained only a slim majority? They didn't want to analyze, conduct any study and research on the the GE13 outlook, the people's expectations and whether if the BN themselves had mistaken something for something.
Well, the real facts here is, our people's expectation here is not race-based. Our people's expectation here are basically more on how is the federal government running the entire nation, their public policies and what are the general impact to the Malaysians, not to any particular race or whatsoever ethnics out there. Our people are talking most of the time on corruptions, power abuse, mismanagement and scandals in the government, its departments and agencies; our people are talking about the crime rates in our nation which had risen to an alarming stage; our people has been talking how the public funds is being spent, what kind of development or projects or have all these initiatives benefited our people. There are to racial outlook at all in our people's demands and expectations.
So, why are the BN leaders so racially motivated on the results of the GE13, depicting the outcome by race in percentage, determining the impact by race in percentage, looking at the percentage of the voters' turn out by race, looking at rural and urban establishments also by race. These BN leaders are still conducting their studies and analysis based on race. Just what kind of 1Malaysia concept is this all about? Such policies are more to further splitting up the segments of the multiracial communities here. There are no Malaysian Point of View at all when dealing with such situations and governing matters.
The GE13 has gone. The impact and outlook are far more racist then ever and this nation is not going to move forward nor reconcile. This nation is not going to cater for all Malaysians if the BN is going to insist that it was the people who are "racist and fanatics" when coming politics. The BN leaders are blaming all of us (people) simply because they couldn't understand what are the mistakes that they had committed so far.
BN is now using racism to threaten and frighten the people away from the Oppositions but we wish to remind all those in the BN coalition, racism will not stop the will of all Malaysians.
