Strengthen anti-corruption laws and reform MACC to enhance its effectiveness

Image
The MACC was established under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 2009 with an intention to enhance the organisationā€™s effectiveness in combating corruption and power abuse in this country. However, during its initial inception, the MACC was put under the jurisdiction of the Prime Ministerā€™s Department (PMD) where the independence of MACC was questioned due to the fact that the commission reports directly to the prime minister instead of the parliament. In aftermath of the 14th general elections, immediately after the new federal government was sworn in, the leadership of the new government immediately took measures to place the MACC under the direct jurisdiction of the parliament and have the then chief commissioner replaced. While the new government was not able to convert MACC into a full-fledged constitutional body with complete independence as it does not have the two thirds majority in the parliament to add this provision in the Federal Constitution, the government should look ...

Parliamentary select committee versus shadow cabinet

Image
In the most recent month, many of us were unaware of the differences between the parliamentary select committees and the shadow cabinet, the one established by the opposition front bench of the Barisan Nasional (BN). One may question why do we really need the parliamentary select committees, when the BN already has the shadow cabinet in place to provide checks on the current Pakatan Harapan (PH) government. The reality here is there are vast difference between having parliamentary select committees and the shadow cabinet. In UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, parliamentary select committees exist concurrently with shadow cabinets of the opposition front bench, while in US, there is no shadow cabinet, but with the existence of powerful congressional and senate committees has indeed provide the most effective check and balance against the governmentā€™s activities. The parliamentary select committees are committees set up within the parliamentary framework consist of members of par...

What slows down our nationā€™s economy? It is everything!

Image
Well, when we ask the above question to many people, many will definitely point their fingers at the present government on their ā€œfailureā€ to address and prevent the current economic downturn and the rising inflation. This is natural for people to voice their frustration and anger of not being able to accept the rising cost of living, inflation and job losses at the current government. Many did not know exactly or did not even bother of wanting to know where such hardships were originated from and why did it happened in the first place. According to economist, Professor Jomo Sundaram, Malaysians should be prepared to brace for tougher times ahead as the economy is beset by mainly the current trade war between the United States and communist China. Besides those external factors, some are also blaming the current situation on the relentless attacks on the previous BN government by the then PH opposition when the then BN has to stop their planning for our nationā€™s economic futur...

Fight factional politics with decent policies

Image
Factional politics within political parties are common. From the strongest political parties to the weakest or smallest political parties, factions are deemed to exist in every of these political organisations. From UMNO, MCA, MIC, PBB, SUPP, SPDP, PRS, PBS, to PKR, DAP, PAS, AMANAH, BERSATU, and furthermore PSM, PRM, PCM, BERJASA, IKATAN, IPF, KIMMA, MCC and many more. Factions do exist in all these political parties. This cannot be denied. Any party leaders who deny the existence of such are merely denying the fact that in politics, one needs to achieve its competitiveness in order to gain power. In the recent incident, one after another allegation, sexual allegations emerged with sex videos, followed by a doctored confession of an alleged homosexual relationship aimed to discredit a leader of one faction within a political party. Yes, in the beginning, when the news appeared, it became a nationwide headline, where everyone of us started to enjoy talking and discussing about it, a...

Can We Get Rid of the Two-Party System Mindset?

Image
As you know the Pakatan Harapan (PH) governance in Malaysia is coming to its first year old. A lot of policy and implementations has been carried out and they are quite many too which are still pending. Why are they pending then? Yes, they are certainly a lot of reasons out there. The numerous effects of the previous governance by the then Barisan Nasional (BN) which has been famous for its corruption, scandals, power abuse, mismanagement, as well as its racial and religious extremism in politics. Well, on 9 May 2019, we Malaysian gradually voted BN out from their power house on that day just because of one major thing. BN and their leaders have been ruined our nation for decades, billions of Ringgit has been lost. The BN leaders became wealthier while our people became even poorer. Our nationā€™s coffers had almost been emptied with all their fancy handouts and swindling-at-large. The then BN government has been borrowing extensively from creditors to finance their leaders pers...

Where are the four academics and why are they afraid of the truth?

Image
Where are those the four academics, UiTM deputy vice-chancellor and law professor Rahmat Mohamad, IIUM law associate professor Shamrahayu Abdul Aziz and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (Usim) law lecturers, Fareed Mohd Hassan and Hisham Hanapi who had recently briefed the rulers with wrong information on the Rome Statute? Why are those four academics so quiet and refused any response to many critics over their misinformation on the Rome Statute? Keeping so quiet or avoiding the people over their inaccurate presentation arenā€™t going to ease our peopleā€™s anger over their intended misinformation. If they had really misinformed the rulers on the Rome Statute, they should come forward and apologies to the rulers and the entire nation over their misleading presentation. As learned professionals in their profession, we wonder why did they present such misinformation to the constitutional monarch? Have they done it accidently or did they do it intentionally with a sole intent to embarrass t...

IPCMC now or it will be none forever !

Image
The shocking reveal on the policeā€™s responsibilities of the two abductions has indeed renewed public calls to have the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to be established as soon as possible in order to address the various cases and misdeeds which involved members of the force. And yet until today, certain elements within the force are still against the IPCMC and this faction within the force had in fact taken numerous steps to ensure the IPCMC does not come into reality forever. The fact that is, the establishment of the IPCMC does not signify anti-police measures, the setting-up of the IPCMC is not to take control over the police force not taking over their role in preserving our nationā€™s security. Furthermore, the new government does not intend to abolish the police force. The proposal to establish the IPCMC is to assist the police force to improve their standards, integrity, transparency and accountability. It will provide various support and amenit...

Can the select committees please start working?

Image
Last year, the Dewan Rakyat Speaker, Mohamad Arif Md Yusof had announced the establishment of six new parliamentary select committees in order to provide oversight on the federal government's budget, appointments and other activities. The six subject areas are: Consideration of Bills, Budget, Home and Defence, Rights and Gender Equality, Federal-State Relations, and, Major Public Appointments. In the beginning of this year, the speaker had also informed the public that more select committees will also be established in the next sitting which has already begun.  However, we have not seen any of these select committees commencing their responsibilities right after the establishments were announced last year. We wonder if the MPs who are sitting in these select committees know exactly what they should kick start, when and where or are they really aware of what are their oversight activities they should undertake. The Public Service Department and Finance Ministry has b...

Common for unpopular policies from the new government but the people must be well-informed

Image
We have been hearing complaints from our people that they have not been able to agree with some new policies implemented by the new government recently. Many policies are seen to be unpopular among the population since Pakatan Harapan (PH) took over the government seat in Putrajaya from Barisan Nasional (BN) following the defeat from the later in 9 May 2018 general elections. Perhaps, today our people has forgotten. The ruins and chaos being left over by the defeat BN in aftermath of the general elections last year. The extensive mess, massive corruptions, mismanagement and power abuse during the BNā€™s reign. All these negative elements left in Putrajaya and its ministries, departments, agencies and GLCs, who are picking-up the mess now? Has anyone realise the fact now? Yes, many are seen to have forgotten and worst of all many had forgotten it easily that the causes are having its effect today, and you cannot just simply blame the new government over all the misfortune and unpop...

Are our nation's ministers so hardworking, detailed and micromanaging?

Image
We all understand that our nation today is rule by a coalition of political parties other than that of BN. Well BN has been defeated in the last GE14 on 9 May 2018 by the then Pakatan Harapan (PH) opposition coalition. PH is now in the government bench while BN is sitting on the opposition bench today. All cabinet minister appointed to their respective portfolios are very new to their ministries and areas. Of course they need to work hard to understand the situation and policies under their respective ministries. A number of changes has taken effect, many are still underway, some issues may be still sensitive to tackle while the others need to be examined in a large context or aspects they may possibly affect some other policies in place. Therefore, there are may questions today on how these new ministers going down to the ground to tackle issues one by one, some to the extend of even petty matters and so-called "they should not even do it" issues. Some people do welco...

Kenapa perlantikan Sheikh Omar dipertikaikan?

Image
Umno ing...

People will be happier with Harapan if Najib is in jail soon

Image
Pakatan Harapan's performance thus far has fallen short of even realistic expectations of its supporters, said veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin. In particular, Kadir said people had expected to see the former prime minister (Najib Abdul Razak) in jail, "months ago". Kadir wrote on his blog today: "They were upset seeing him behaving as if he is still the prime minister. "His supporters are regaining their confidence and are urging him on ā€“ the latest being with the 'malu apa bossku' campaign. "Without depriving him and his co-conspirators of justice, the people will be happier if they are assigned to prison for their offences as soon as possible." Kadir said this while commenting on Harapan's defeat in the Cameron Highlands by-election last Saturday. Najib has been implicated in the 1MDB scandal, among others, and is facing 38 criminal charges for abuse of power, corruption and money laundering. The first set of charges wer...
