Can We Get Rid of the Two-Party System Mindset?
As you know the Pakatan Harapan (PH) governance in Malaysia is coming to its first year old. A lot of policy and implementations has been carried out and they are quite many too which are still pending.
Why are they pending then? Yes, they are certainly a lot of reasons out there. The numerous effects of the previous governance by the then Barisan Nasional (BN) which has been famous for its corruption, scandals, power abuse, mismanagement, as well as its racial and religious extremism in politics.
Well, on 9 May 2019, we Malaysian gradually voted BN out from their power house on that day just because of one major thing. BN and their leaders have been ruined our nation for decades, billions of Ringgit has been lost. The BN leaders became wealthier while our people became even poorer. Our nation’s coffers had almost been emptied with all their fancy handouts and swindling-at-large.
The then BN government has been borrowing extensively from creditors to finance their leaders personal interests and the nation’s debts eventually went up into trillions of Ringgit which had then devalued the country’s currency in due process.
BN was shown the door on that very day because they brought our nation and the people’s livelihood right down to the bottom while their leaders became even richer and more powerful because of their devastating crimes.
This is what we should remember on that day we brought down a government ran by a group of elites who had stolen from our nation and the people.
Then comes to the new PH who is now on the government bench doing whatever it can to salvage what has been left from the over 60 years of BN rule with power abuse and corruption.
During their initial period, they had been doing all they can to put our nation’s economy back on track and to restore investors’ confidence over our nation’s integrity and administration.
Over the first few months, PH had managed to fulfilled many of its promises to the people while many promises too remain unfulfilled due to the government’s current financial restraint and economic setback as the result of the currency devaluation in the market due to the trillions of Ringgit in debts.
Due to many unfulfilled promises or implementations, many people reacted in dismay over the PH government’s so-called “U-turn” as they claimed. In many occasions, the newly minted opposition BN has also taken advantage over this subject by pinning on the ineffectiveness of the PH government in fulfilling the people’s aspiration.
It seems that many people has reacted emotionally and many has been unreasonably reacted based on influence generated by BN, in particular Umno and MCA in making way that reflects PH has not been able to fulfil the people’s wishes which they had promised in the last general elections.
And in the recently number of by-elections, the people strike back by voting BN again in order to show their displeasure to PH which has been systematically reflected by BN has been unfulfilled and ineffective in their first year of governance.
Question here is, why would the people vote the BN again in order to show their displeasure to PH? The though question here is, why should we vote BN again who has a proven track record of corruption and stealing from our nation? Why should we take such risk again?
Why can’t we consider some other opposition parties out there which we could see are still credible in providing an effective checks and balance, like Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) or even Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan), rather than BN which is still sticking to their bad old racial and religious extremism which can further ruin our nation’s national unity.
We are currently stirring towards a New Malaysia, a New Chapter now for our nation, and we should have new and credible opposition parties to provide real and effective checks and balance on the PH government in the parliament and state legislative assemblies rather than allowing BN to continue stoking racial and religious bigotry and hate in these institutions.
To us, BN does not have the credibility to become an effective opposition coalition of parties because of their continuous conservative politics of race, religion and hate. They cannot even produce any alternative public policies, practical policies for our people. Whatever they bring up or debate in parliament or state legislative assemblies are merely race, religion, action against women and trading gender insults, bullying and they have no practical reasons in whatever they say in these institutions.

Furthermore, BN's shadow cabinet is merely a window dressing and is good as dead ever since.
Many of us have this particular mindset, "if PH does not make us happy then we vote BN again". This is the simplest thing our people could do to show their displeasure over government policies or implementations.
Can we just be matured and Get Rid of the Two-Party System from our mindset for the good sake of our nation?
There are few credible opposition parties out there who are able to give a proper and effective checks and balance, who could prove that there are so much better than BN.
Why not put PSM, PRM and Gerakan into the opposition bench instead of continue looking for BN in checking on PH’s policies and implementations?
We knew Gerakan has been in BN for decades but ever since they left BN, Gerakan has been shading away from the shadows of their previous coalition and their subservient outlook to make their point to be an effective opposition party. As Gerakan has been in the government before, they can be an effective opposition based on their past knowledge and experience in the same.
Both PSM and PRM should also be given some rooms to prove their worth to the people because of the years of their existence and service to the people.
PSM has been on the ground to service the grassroots and working class and providing checks on various government agencies and numerous enterprises who has been seen to be suppressing the working class, denying people’s housing rights, developing some socio-economic alternatives for the government’s review and they have been doing such from outside of the parliament and state legislative assemblies since. So, why not giving them a chance to be a new force in the opposition?
PRM while seems to be ineffective since, has been actively on the ground to pursue their ideas as an alternative centre-left which could serve the interest of the middle-class population. Their track records and experience in the local elections in the 60s cannot be ignored. Asides, their current pool of leaders were experienced personalities previously sidelined during their past connections with DAP, PKR, Gerakan, MCA, MIC, PAS or Umno. With their experiences, why not give them a chance as well to serve our people and the nation if they are eager to represent us?
Many people would say, we cannot see PSM, PRM or Gerakan doing things at all. By not giving them a chance to prove themselves in the parliament and the state legislative assemblies, how are we going to see PSM, PRM or Gerakan doing their part for us if we choose not to vote for them at all?
The question here is, why we should continue to give our votes to BN when their bad track records has been proven while those who are wanting to serve were not even given a chance to do so?
Again! Can we all Get Rid of the Two-Party System from our MINDS?
