Pakatan supports Royal Commission on Religion

The Pakatan Rakyat has agreed to a common policy to form a Royal Commission to deal with religious issues.

According to its Common Policy Framework document released today, the coalition of three parties will also defend the position of Islam as the religion of the federation, as provided for by the constitution.

“Pakatan Rakyat vows to set up a comprehensive mechanism to provide just resolution to cases which involve the overlap of civil and syariah laws, including a Royal Commission to deeply study all relevant issues,” said the policy statement expected to be endorsed by some 1,500 coalition

PR convention delegates later today. The proposal is seen as a giant step forward for PR as similar proposal — to set up the Inter Faith Commission (IFC) by the Malaysian Consultative Council Of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism (MCCBCHS) in 2001.

This is a very good framework to begin with. Never heard of it during the Umno dominated Barisan Nasional (BN) reign. Even Gerakan and PPP who both claimed to be multiracial and non-racial approach in politics did not have enough guts to push forward their Bangsa Malaysia, multiracial and multireligious ideologies for fear being kicked at by the dominant Umno.

The setting up of a Royal Commission on Religion or IFC as formerly proposed is not about questioning any religion's right or existence as claimed by Umno. This proposal is purely a consultative body aimed at promoting and enhance mutual understanding and continuous dialogues amongst religions in our nation and also to look at situations where it sould be properly and professionally resolved instead of encouraging or supporting religious groups going into streets to incite hatred and insult other religions.

Going into street demonstration to show hatred to another religion is not the way of any religion in the world. Such acts are uncivilised and very inhumane. No religion in this world will ever encourage its devotees or followers to act and behave violently.

And those who go for the violent, hatred and encourages bloodshed are all deviant groups and organisations who did really understand the religion they professed.

Congratulations Pakatan Rakyat for your outstanding achievement. They are to be more challenges ahead and we hope you are prepared for it.
