Can 1Malaysia really work in our educational system? Where are the facts and results?

(An in depth to my previous article on the similar topic in this blog)

Since Datuk Najib Razak took over as prime minister, he introduced the 1Malaysia concept which is to be undertaken by his administration. But does he realize that, if he is serious about racial integration, it must be first by revamping the entire educational system? Has Najib ever looked into this first prior to his commencement of 1Malaysia?

Almost all of us agreed that in order to foster greater racial integration today, it must be start from school with its educational system first.

However, today we still hear reasons given by non-Malay parents for not wanting to send their children to national schools. Their core concern is the overly emphasizing of Islam in national schools and due to this the national schools has been increasingly dominated by Malay students which by now had turned these national schools into “Malay schools” or “Islamic schools” instead of its origin position as national schools.

In the past and present, the federal government and its education ministry had repeatedly pledged that they will make national schools more appealing to non-Malays, for example by having more Chinese and Indian teachers to be based in national schools, introducing Mandarin and Tamil sessions, encouraging and promoting English as one of the medium of instructions, multiracial composition in classrooms, teachers and so on.

Besides, the education ministry also mentioned of promoting racial integration by having the educational system in national schools revamped to enhance a multiracial outlook in its educating environment.

But till today, we still see there are too much talk here and there and no action at all. The education ministry had not done anything effective as at to-date. Has it got to do with the bureaucratic problem or the work frame from within the education ministry, its state departments, its district education offices and relevant agencies? Resistance to change and conservative education officials in the entire institution are seen as one of the stumbling block to the change effort in order to revamp the educational system in national schools.

If that is the case, why didn’t the education ministry including its education minister step up its efforts to curb these negative elements within the institution itself in order to move forward? These conservative officials are clearly seen sabotaging the efforts to promote racial integration in the educational system. Are they really serious and sincere about this issue or merely talk politics?

If 1Malaysia is for real, and you really mean business, prove your words by walking the talk instead of just promoting it in the press and media but no action. To-date, we have not seen any results of a real racial integration effort ongoing other than a failed 1Malaysia camping trip which caused the death of three students as a result of drowning.
