MH370 exposes flaws of government, its inability to manage a major crisis

My article was earlier published in TheAntDaily.com on 18/3/2014 The mysterious disappearance of the MAS flight MH370 has exposed many flaws in the federal government, its departments and various agencies. The government’s handling of the crisis has been unprofessional and shocking since the Boeing 777 with 239 people on board went missing while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8. One major flaw is the government’s sheer incompetence in coordinating the search and rescue operations (SAR) and investigations into the incident which has attracted global attention. Government-linked entities like the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB), Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have been giving contradicting statements to the affected families and the media. It seems like these government agencies, their hea...

Is the constitution seditious too?

My article was earlier published in the rakyattimes.com on 10/3/2014 Recently, the Bukit Gelugor member of parliament and DAP national chairman Karpal Singh has been convicted and found guilty of sedition by the court against the Sultan of Perak. What wrong has Karpal committed then? As a lawyer, Karpal has made his expression known to the public based on his legal experience that certain ruler has erred in law and therefore can be subject to legal challenge. That was Karpal’s legal opinion based on the fact of the existence of Article 182 of the Federal Constitution where it clearly states that any ruler or even the King could be charged for an offence or sued in a civil suit in a Special Court. The DAP MP has made the said legal opinion in public following the 2009 coup d’etat of which the Perak state government was overthrown by Umno with the support from the palace and an Umno-led rebel state government was subsequently installed following the successful rebellion...

Kehilangan Pesawat MH370: Kenapa Khabar Angin Terus Berleluasa?

Criticising a party or leader does not amount to insulting a race or religion

This article was earlier published in TheAntDaily.com on 2/3/2014 Since 2008, there have been many allegations that the Malays and Islam have been insulted, undermined and challenged. The impression given is that they are constantly under threat. The situation has turned from bad to worse. Nowadays, when someone criticises a top leader of Umno, the dominant party in the ruling coalition, he or she would inevitably be accused of insulting the Malay race, Islam and even challenging the special rights of the Malays. Almost everyone is wondering why the country’s political landscape has turned so ugly. Why must politics be so racist and be filled with threats and acts of vengeance? We keep asking all these questions to the politicians almost every day. The country gained its independence more than 56 years ago and by now, it should be developed, civilised and mature in terms of political, socio-economic and human rights, or whatever you could name. Unfortunately, our ...

Budaya Mengganas, Mengancam, Kekerasan, Kebencian, Dendam, Ini Bukan Sebarang Ugama

Image

Big question mark over MCA’s much-hyped transformation plan

This article was earlier published in TheAntDaily.com on 20/2/2014 MCA leaders met in Genting Highlands last month to brainstorm its transformation plan and map out strategies for the party to regain electoral support. In its transformation plan, MCA wants to strive for good governance and accountability, check corruption and wastage, and promote effective public service and quality education. MCA has also pledged to be more vocal in addressing issues and to adopt a multiracial approach in its quest for a better nation. These declarations beg a question: will MCA be able to adapt to its own transformation plan? There was some sort of commitment from the party’s central committee, but what about the divisional and branch levels as well as its local leaders? Did all the divisional and branch chairmen as well as their committees really understand what the transformation plan is all about? Are these local leaders really committed in ensuring the party really changes fo...
