Why PSM needs to be policy driven?
We have seen the total failure of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, not only its failure to administer our nation but the coalition’s entire leadership, administration and system has been tainted with mass corruption, mismanagement and power abuse. It is a total disaster.
Even the prime minister and his entire cabinet is a total failure, having become a laughing stock throughout the world.
Well, what about the opposition bloc? From Pakatan Rakyat to Pakatan Harapan and later on what Pakatan more, we won’t know yet as of now. Leaders of the opposition parties in Pakatan are still bickering among themselves over who is bigger, smaller or who should listen to whom. And they are still bickering today. Thanks to PAS’ destructive kind of religious conservatism, Pakatan had effectively lost its strong voice in the parliament today.
The people who has been putting so much hope on Pakatan to get rid of BN are now feeling hopeless and frustrated because our nation is turning from bad to worst. The people are now at lost on whether they should return their votes to BN as a way to punish Pakatan over their feuds or to continue supporting Pakatan as before. More people are becoming undecided today.
The people are wondering, if the votes are returned to BN, more damages awaits to be unleashed. If we vote for Pakatan, it cannot be guaranteed if there will be a stable administration as its leaders keeps on bickering over power and dominance, while PAS is definitely a destroyer in between ruling and opposition coalitions.
In this case, we need a viable political alternative to counter BN, Pakatan and PAS. BN has been destructive to our nation, Pakatan has not been good at all while PAS is overly religious driven.
As what we could see today, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) could be the viable alternative to both BN and Pakatan should both the ruling and opposition coalitions continue to be disappointing people and the nation.
However, PSM is still seen as a grassroots based political party and the party is not a policy and parliamentary driven despite having a member of parliament in its ranks.
PSM has been focusing on grassroots matters, land evictions and other petty issues like employment and in many occasions, also fighting for the rights of immigrant workers. In these focus areas it only covers less than 15 percent of the total electoral population and most areas, its supporters are scattered.
Yes, we cannot deny that many PSM leaders do participate in a number of policy forums but the main concern here is, the party itself and their leaders are lack in policy driven work.
Policy driven means, the party needs to project itself to handle national issues, like overseeing the governments of the day, in this case BN in Putrajaya, Pakatan in Penang and Selangor and PAS in Kelantan.
Overseeing these administrations means, observing and scrutinizing the policies of these governments, providing checks and balance as well as proposing alternative policies to be debated, intensifying them through campaigns, forums and party activities to create awareness among the general public.
But such is still not taking place in PSM. If PSM wants to change and improve the livelihood of the grassroots the party must also seek to change the current policies which has been seen as imbalance and unjust.
Going down to the ground to fight for the rights of the grassroots population is good, but what good does it have if the policies outline by the government are not changed or reformed?
Unfair policies and injustice will continue to haunt our people and the grassroots in particular.
In this case, PSM will be repeating their efforts and struggles on and on from A to Z and when the issues arise again, there goes from A to Z again and it will certain repeat again and again with no end at all.
PSM, are these real struggles? You keep on repeating them everyday, but not working on changing what has been regulated.
The PSM leadership should understand that the party cannot function like an NGO or charity organization forever. PSM must be seen as a party for governing, actively providing checks and balance on the governments be it federal or states, city councils or local governments and even GLCs as well.
PSM must be seen as a party that is trying to build and develop the nation, its structure and socio-economic fundamentals and work its way to bring politics back to our people, instead of among the population.
PSM needs to move forward and start to drive policies for the betterment of our people and the nation. Remember, we are not seeking PSM to revert to revisionism.
